The Swedish NMR Centre is a national research infrastructure located at the University of Gothenburg. We are open to users from Sweden and the rest of the world.
Researchers come to the Swedish NMR Centre to use NMR spectroscopy to study everything from protein structures to various material properties and biomarkers in blood. The centre offers access to instrumentation and support at the infrastructure.
The Swedish NMR Centre is to first and foremost support academic research locally, nationally and internationally and support education. As long as time and resources permit, it can support industrial research in Sweden.
Since 2016 the Swedish NMR Centre has been part of SciLifeLab, a national institute for molecular biosciences. As far as the NMR Centre is concerned, the focus is on structural biology, chemical biology and metabolomics. The latter is an area of research that has come to the fore in the biosciences in recent years.
With funding from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, the Swedish Research Council and SciLifeLab, special support is provided in the fields of structural biology, chemical biology and metabolomics.
The centre is located in the Hasselblad laboratory, which is spacious and suitable for our activities. The laboratory has a central location with respect to the natural scientific and medical activities of the university. Apart from the 500 m2 main NMR hall, the laboratory houses a library/conference room, a lecture hall and several offices.
The Swedish NMR Centre has one of the world’s best equipped NMR facilities. There are seven spectroscopes and all are made up of superconducting magnets cooled using liquid helium and have advanced detectors for a wide range of applications.
The instrument park comprises one 500 MHz spectrometer, two 600 MHz spectrometers, two 800 MHz spectrometers and one 900 MHz spectrometer. The spectrometers are all equipped with pulsed field gradient triple resonance probes, primarily suitable for biological spectroscopy, but a variety of probes, e.g. flow probe, MA/S probe for solid state, inverse detection probes, diffusion probes, are also available. The 900 MHz instrument is equipped with a cold-probe, creating a system with unsurpassed sensitivity and resolution. In addition, the medical faculty has placed the latest generation of mass spectrometers, a FTICR-instrument, in the Hasselblad laboratory. This instrument is built around a superconducting magnet, as are all other instruments at the centre.
The Foundation Swedish NMR Centre was established in 1991 through a donation of 20 MKr from Reserca (a research-focused affiliated company of the Swedish Tobacco Company) and two NMR spectrometers, 500 MHz and 600 MHz, respectively, were purchased.
Half of the machine time was made available to researchers in the Swedish academia at no charge. In 1995, the industry-related administration of the spectrometers, which by that time had been taken over by Pharmacia, ceased and it became necessary to transfer the national centre to a university.
Following a donation from the Hasselblad foundation (20 MKr), the Hasselblad laboratory was erected at the University of Gothenburg. Furthermore, a donation from the Wallenberg foundation (25 MKr) made it possible to upgrade and increase the equipment at the NMR centre with three additional spectrometers, 500 MHz, 600 MHz and 800 MHz.
The activities at the Swedish NMR centre at University of Gothenburg started in 1997 and half of the spectrometer time was made available to non-local users.
When the Swedish NMR Centre moved to University of Gothenburg, the existing positions were transferred along with it, and in addition, the Faculty of Science and the Sahlgrenska Academy, respectively, decided to establish two professorial chairs related to NMR. In the year 2002, the Wallenberg foundation donated another 30 MKr, and together with a funding of ca 15 MKr from University of Gothenburg, 2 MKr from Chalmers and 1 MKr from the Hasselblad foundation, one of the first 900 MHz spectrometers, with an accessory cryoprobe, was purchased.
